Dental Spa’s Taking the stress out of a Dental Appointment

dentalspas.jpgMore and more people are beginning to appreciate the lengths dental spas go to provide the best and most stress free environment during their visits. Dental spas are evolving into an industry of its own that more and more traditional offices are turning into spa treatment centers. Though many experts and practitioners recommend that you still do the precursory checks regarding the dentist and other certifications for the aim is not on your beauty but on your teeth. The beauty and welness part is only an added extra!
Check with the office and if possible their website so you get to see the work they do. Ask around so you don’t get into something that is quite unpleasant. The skill of the spa personnel should also be checked and when in doubt ask questions for you may end up with more than you ask for.

The Dentist Will Sedate You now

35.jpg

Fear of the dentist is something that will never disappear; this is true even for those who are in a Dental Spa.

Sometimes the fear is so overwhelming that patients just could not hold still while in the dentist’s chair. So the next and ultimate solution would be for the dentist to sedate the patient.

“When we open the door to sedation, it can be pills, prescription drugs or even something as simple as over-the-counter medication that has a calming effect,” he says.

For some individuals, such drugs are insufficient.

“The next step is nitrous oxide — laughing gas. It has some advantages because it is safe and simple.

Official Football Dental Spa?

34.jpg

So what does a famous lingerie model, a Commonwealth lightweight champion boxer, a singer for a Madchester band, and a football team have in common? They all go to the same dental spa.

Yes, Caprice, Amir Khan, Shaun Ryder, and now the entire Manchester City FC was just added to a long list of clientèle for Dr. Lance Knight. He specializes in sports dentistry and has received awards for his dentistry skills.

He says of the deal with Manchester City: “Footballers’ teeth can take a real battering over the course of a season, so it’s important to have full, high-quality dental care in place.

“Sports dentistry is unpredictable, which can make it a real challenge, and it certainly isn’t as glamorous as it sounds – but there’s no doubt that it’s incredibly rewarding.”

Manicure: Paraffin Treatment

27.jpg

For those who watch a lot of TV shows akin to CSI etc., you may have heard the words paraffin before. It’s normally used to check if someone recently fired a gun. I mentioned this because you’ll be going through this process as well in the dental spa.

While you’re having your tooth pulled out, someone may be doing manicure on your hands. One of the ways they do this is through Paraffin treatments. This is the process where they dip your hands into melted paraffin wax so they’ll soften and moisten. It’s used because the wax maybe heated to a high degree without the risk of scalding your hand.

Once done, your hands are wrapped in plastic or tin foil, the covered with cloth. After a few minuted the paraffin is cooled and dried, while your hands are now soft and moisturized.

  • Mechanical: It involves a physical scrubbing of the skin. Materials used are: microfiber cloths, adhesive exfoliation sheets, micro-bead facial scrubs, crushed apricot kernel or almond shells, and others.
  • Chemical: These inlcude scrubs containing the following: salicylic acid, glycolic acid, fruit enzymes, citric acid, or malic acid.

Waxing: Is it for you?

26.jpg

A little bit of waxing to complement your new set of shiny white teeth wouldn’t hurt really. Unless of course, this is going to be your first time. Not to worry though, as waxing has benefits such as the ones below.

It’s supposed to be an effective method of removing large amounts of hair compared to shaving, which may take some time.

Waxing is also a longer-lasting method as hair usually grows back after two to eight weeks, while normal shaving will grow again in a couple of days. The reason for this is that waxing takes out the hair roots as well, while saving just slices the hair and leaves the roots under the skin.

Dental spa amenities: Massages

25.jpg

Massages have excellent benefits. Besides enjoying them while or after your dental treatment, they also offer the following:

  • Pain relief: this is the most immediate effect of massages. Acupressure is considered to be one of the better type of massages in relieving back pain.
  • State Anxiety: It relaxes people especially after a traumatic or painful experience like having your tooth/teeth pulled out.
  • Blood pressure and heart rate: it reduces blood pressure and heart rate until normal levels are achieved.

These are just some of the effects of massages. Why don’t you ask for some at your favorite Dental Spa?

Music Industry vs. Dentists

23.jpg

Dental Spas usually have soothing music as a background while they’re doing their job on your teeth. However, there’s a group out there who would like the dentists to pay for those music everytime you hear them.

The Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN), a group that collects royalties for musicians, locked on dental offices. They’re asking these establishments to cough up a yearly fee of a $100 if they use copyrighted music to entertain patients.

Naturally, the dentists feel that the SOCAN is just getting way too greedy:

“I just feel it’s a money grab,” said Vancouver dentist Kerstin Conn, who recently received a letter from SOCAN at her office. “We paid for our CD and we’re using it to listen to, and half the time my patients … don’t even hear the music.”

What is Dental Spa?

3.jpg

When people hear the word dentist, one of the first things that come to their mind is “pain”. It’s expected from anyone who has ever opened their mouth to a dentist—it never really gets any easier. Even just having teeth cleaned can be a traumatic experience. Enter: the dental spa.

The dental spa is a combination of two unrelated subjects, that when combined, works wonderfully. According to wikipedia,

… it’s a dental facility supervised by a licensed dentist in which dental services are provided alongside spa treatments.

These treatments may involve anything from a foot massage to a Botox shot. We’ll give you more info on this in the next post.
